I also write technical articles that sometimes take me months to research and write. These old articles kept bringing in some revenue but now it seems like the only money I will be getting is from referrals.. that also has been killed off.

Some of my articles are on the first page of google and bring in a lot of traffic (referrals) but it seems like that now has lost its value.

I have had a long hiatus from writing and was just today going to try get back to writing when I saw that my earnings for this month will be miniscule. While the economic bit is not why I write it is a nice carrot. I will still try to write some new articles to see what happens...
